Combat feels incredibly familiar but remains as punishing as ever. We spent much of our sessions being summoned into battles against Margit, but co-op was open for several bosses in the world, including the terrifying Tree Sentinel who roamed the world and a massive, fearsome dragon, Agheel. Meeting Melina is part of what appears to be the game’s intended critical path to the first major boss, a hulking battle mage dubbed Margit the Fell Omen. We only saw her during this one cutscene in our time with the game, but she’ll surely be a major player in the full release. Melina fulfills the role of Dark Souls’ Firekeepers, and she gives off Emerald Maiden vibes. With that, our hero was no longer maidenless and we were finally able to convert the hard-earned runes into levels. Exploring further, we met Melina, a ghostly figure who told us she was a Finger Maiden. We also found what appeared to be a dragonslayer waiting in the ruins for us, warning us of a massive dragon further down the path. However, as we are Tarnished - a maidenless undead with no power and no hope - he doesn’t suspect we’ll last long.Įxploring further revealed Kalé, a curious merchant whose design evoked memories of Santa Claus - a design choice that surely can’t be coincidental. White-Faced Varré greeted us outside the gravesite on The First Step, where he gave us our ultimate task - follow the light of grace to the home of the demigod Godrick the Grafted. We did find three people who wanted to chat with us, though. The overworld only has a handful of NPCs, though that was to be expected based on FromSoftware’s comments on how the game would work. Being able to creep alongside the road, hiding in bushes and waiting for the prime opportunity to land a devastating backstab just felt good. Just giving players the ability to jump and crouch is a game-changer, allowing you significantly more control over encounters. Getting there will be a journey, but fortunately, we were given plenty of tools to traverse the world. The first NPC tasked us with making our way to that tree, but it is, naturally, impossibly far in the distance. Exiting those graves evoked that epic breathlessness that came with first seeing the vast Hyrule laid out before you in Breath of the Wild. Looming in the distance is the first of several glowing trees, known as Erdtrees. When the test opened up, we exited a moody, underground gravesite dubbed the Fringefolk Hero’s Grave to a gorgeous, lush field replete with green landscapes, unlike anything we ever saw in Dark Souls or Bloodborne. The network test did at least ease us into things, though.
